The (Ree)lationship Guide: Study Shows That Men Gossip More Than Women

Relationship Expert Paul Brunson- also known as the Modern Day Matchmaker- conducted an unofficial study on myths about men and dating

Relationship expert, Paul Brunson, recently conducted an unofficial study to defy common thinking about men and their thoughts about relationships and dating. During his research, he found a study conducted by the Social Issues Research Centre that discovered 33 percent of men indulge in gossip daily or almost every day — compared with 26 percent of women. The rest of his myth busters are listed below.

Hand And Foot Size Do Not Correlate With Penis Size

Researchers at University College London say there is no evidence linking a man’s shoe or hand size to the length of his penis. After measuring the vital parts of hundreds of men, they concluded that the theory has no scientific basis.

Men Are Not Intimidated By Successful Women

The word intimidated is the most misused word in dating. Yes, some men (just as some women) are intimidated in select scenarios (like getting set up on a blind date with Grace Jones) but most of the time, like 99% of the time, men are not intimidated (but attracted) to strong women.

Men Do Have Feelings

There is definitely a different socialization that happens in adolescence among boys and girls as it relates to being “touchy/feely” but essentially, feelings come from an area in the brain both women and men have. The amygdala is a part of the brain both men and women have that controls our emotional responses.

Men Like To Be Asked Out On A Date

I write about this extensively in my new book, It’s Complicated – But It Doesn’t Have To Be. Everyone appreciates being admired and having someone show enough interest to ask you out is the ultimate showing of flattery. What people don’t want is to be asked out by people they don’t like (or don’t find attractive).

Men Want To Commit

This one I blame on the 80/20 rule. I’ve seen firsthand from my clients that men commit at the same rate as women. The issue comes in with a small percentage of men (I call these the 20 percenters) who habitually enter and leave relationships aka “The Commitment Phobes.”

Men Are Talkative

When researchers have tried to compare the number of words used by both men and women in the same situation, the differences were negligible. If anything, studies show men talk a little bit more.

Men Do Not Think About Sex All The Time

The statistic I frequently hear is that sexual thoughts cross a man’s mind every seven seconds. This couldn’t be further from the truth. According to the Kinsey Institute, 54 percent of men think about sex every day, but 43 percent only consider it a few times a month or a few times a week, while four percent make it the whole month before pondering the subject. —Source

What you’ll find in dating and relationships is that statistics will often contradict themselves and men and women are as much the same as they are different. I always advise my clients to learn more about themselves with each date and each relationship. The more you learn about yourself while you’re dating and/or in a relationship, the easier it will be to discover what you will and will not tolerate if and/or when you decide to get married. (Note: This ideology is not to be confused with the concept of finding yourself before getting into a relationship. It is critically important to already have self-esteem before entering into a relationship and/or the dating scene.)

  1. Too amazing…learning that men not only gossip, but do so MORE often than women…..priceless

  2. I don't really think this is news. I can recall as a child so often hearing about how men will always talk, especially about the girls or women who put out and spread it around.

  3. This isn't really news to me, though it is nice to have what I've known for years finally backed up by research.

I worked in male-dominated industries most of my working life and observed universally at all the companies I worked for that men not only gossip but do so way much more that women. The only thing that surprises me is the number of 33% of males being gossips – I would have expected that to be higher.

  4. Interesting article…but not at all surprsing. Men always claim they don't "gossip" but we ladies KNOW the truth don't we. My mother use to say "men are worse than women" A man's ego gets the best of him more times than not. Call it bragging, male pride, ego. Men love to toot their own horns, especially around other men…. its a way to claim their territory I guess. WHO knows. LOL

  5. Men surely do gossip. Some men will admit it and others won't. But the facts don't change. How do you think the word got around school or on the job about "certain" females?

  6. Ya'll better be glad that we've evolved to gossipping; back in the olden days, when we heard an insult, somebody would need to be killed.

  7. Thanks for any other great post. Where else may just anyone get that type of information in such an ideal approach of writing? I’ve a presentation subsequent week, and I’m on the search for such information.
