Man Breaks Infant Daughter’s Hand to Get Her to Stop Sucking Her Thumb
A man is being charged with child abuse after allegedly breaking his daughter’s thumb. The man had been trying to get the five-month old to stop sucking her thumb and took things a bit too far. Orane Gowans has a wife and three kids under the age of five, and he might have them taken away from him after this incident.
“I’m kind of shocked because like I said, they’ve always been quiet … never seen no craziness,” said a neighbor, Paul Webb.
The girl’s hand was broken in several spots after the father smacked it. Neighbor Robin Taylor was highly upset that this father could harm his own child in this way.
“Unimaginable. It makes me feel sick to my stomach and emotional,” said Taylor.
The father first refused to let the child see a doctor, telling his wife that her hand was swollen from a bug bite. But he later admitted that he slapped her hand. Does this mean that he wanted to harm his child? It’s hard to tell. But it does say that hitting your child can be dangerous.
“It’s especially sad when you have a five-month-old who can’t talk, who can’t tell you what is wrong … to endure such an incident like this,” said Port St. Lucie Police spokesman Frank Sabol.
The father doesn’t have a criminal record or history of child abuse. His kids are not in protective custody, but he has been arrested. Gowans posted $5,000 bond and was released.
