There are not many Black folks in the cockpits of America’s airliners nowadays, but one man in Compton, California is trying to change that.
CNN recently featured a Black pilot and entrepreneur Robin Petgrave who teaches young, inner-city kids in Compton how to cruise the sky through an after-school program. Petgrave, who is the founder of Tomorrow’s Aeronautical Museum, hopes it will keep these young people from cruising the streets.
“When a kid learns how to fly, they learn discipline, they learn self-control, they learn time management,” Petgrave says. “They learn why all of this stuff their teachers are cramming down their throats is important. Math, history, communication skills.”
One of his young students, Tasneem Khatib, says that flying gives her the confidence that there is nothing she cannot do. “It’s a great experience,” Khatib says. “It makes me feel like I can do anything.”
