Coca-Cola Said To Discriminate Against Minority Workers: Lawsuit Filed

Post By RelatedRelated Post

A total of sixteen Black and Hispanic employees at the Coca-Cola soft drink company have filed a lawsuit claiming that they have been forced to work under conditions that can be categorized as being “a cesspool of racial discrimination,” reports the New York Daily News on Monday.

The Brooklyn Federal Court lawsuit which was filed against two of the company’s five production plants in Maspeth and Elmsford, New York, accuses the popular soft drink manufacturer of maintaining racially discriminatory and hostile environments.

Sondra Walker, a merchandiser at the Maspeth plant, is one the workers claiming that she was ridiculed in a derogatory manner. She told the New York Daily News that she was referred to as ”nappy head and Aunt JaMamma” on the work floor without any disciplinary action taken against her verbal abuser.

Walker also reveals another incident where a White co-worker was tasked with cleaning out a sewer.  The worker, who felt the assignment was a menial one better suited for a “n***er” was never reprimanded for his racially explosive and offensive choice of words.

The latest lawsuit is just one of a few that have been lodged against Coca-Cola over the years.  An April 1999 lawsuit filed by Black employees accused the company of erecting a corporate hierarchy in which Black employees were clustered at the bottom of the pay scale, averaging $26,000 a year less than White workers.  In November 2000, in the largest settlement ever in a racial discrimination case, the Coca-Cola Company agreed to fork over more than $192 million to resolve the federal lawsuit brought by those Black employees which implemented changes in the way that the company manages, promotes and treats Black employees in the U.S.

In regards to the most recent discrimination allegations mentioned in the lawsuit against Coca-Cola, spokesperson Toney Anaya told the New York Daily News that such racial biases are not tolerated by the manufacturer.

We take this matter seriously and are investigating the allegations,” Anaya said in a statement.

  1. Black ppl don’t buy another coke product. Dont support companies that disrespect you.

  2. I have always wondered why white people think that they are so entitled? Up until now I would always drink Coke but from now on I will stay away from any Coke product. Hopefully, more blacks and Hispanics will learn about this and do the same. I guarantee that the company would feel the difference and these employees will win their lawsuit.

  3. If you feel have been discriminated – don’t just stay there – sue whoever discriminates against you. We have now Erick Holder to back us up. That’s why I am asking to join me in suing Sears for its discriminatory treatment of Blacks. I took my car to Sears shop to repair wheel alignment. The price is usually $79.99. Sears employees refused to repair the alignment citing there were some other issues with my car to be repaired before repairing the alignment. The repair people said it would cost me $879 for repairs before the alignment. I left the car repair shop – very sad. I did not have the money. So I drove the car for five days with front wheels twitching violently. On the fifth day, I resolved to take my car to another repair shop – about 200 yards from Sears’. The repair shop took less than hour to repair the alignment. My car drove just fine. I have sued Sears for its discrimination and lying to me about bogus cost of repairs. The case is in federal court. I am now telling you if anybody discriminates against you, just take them to court. That’s only way these racists learn.

( drug testing welfare applications in the state of fla., redistricing the map for voters, so the republicans can get an edge in the upcoming nov.2012, monies coming into the states from the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT to help homeowners struggling while un-underemployed,.. http://WWW.HARDESTHITHELP.ORG.. & yet these dollars are not being disperse properly for homeowners..) quiet as its kept, WE, the people is being taken back to the 40’s JIM CROW ERA !!!…everybody must be informed & stay connected >> GET INVOLVED..& TAKE ACTION !!!…concerned citizens committee, inc. miami, fla.

  6. On 3/19/2012 I printed a coupon that was sent to my e-mail address from Meineke Car Care Center. I needed an oil change, so I took the coupon whcih clearly showed $19.95 plus tax, for an oil and filter change. When the job was done, Paul, the desk clerk charged my debit card account $25.83. When I objected to it he said that the coupon was sent weeks ago. That’s when I pointed out (on the coupon) that the expiration date of their offer clearly stated April 15, 2012. He refused to honor their coupon, and I ended up paying full price for the oil change. THIS WAS CLEARLY A SCAM!! Brothers and Sisters, we must boycott Advance Auto Centers/Meineke Car Care Centers everywhere. White folks have no problems with treating us like ‘Slap-heads’. The only thing they appreciate is ‘making money off of us’. Yes… bigotry is still alive and well in America. Let’s hit them where it hurts… ‘IN THEIR POCKETS’
I reprinted the same coupon when I returned home. I’m not finished with them yet.

  7. Yes racial bias is still alive and well. Ignorant racist people resist change. They yearn for things to remain the same, they are afraid. Out with the old and in with the new, yesterday is gone. They are trying to drug test Tanf and food stamp recipients all the U.S Cities but it is not a state funded program. It is a federally funded grant program. It allows States to offer Variety of Social Services to Needy Families…Such as Job Skills Training…..Education Related To Your Employment and….Secondary Schooling or a GED Program. It is a Federal Funded Program Designed To Assist Needed Families of all Ethnic Backgrounds…..We Should Unite Together To Stand Up Against Racisim, Where-Ever and Whenever It Rears It’s Ugly Head!!!

  8. @Rea Perry, good for you contact the BBB and file a complaint against them showing the coupon. The more we stand up to them the better. Good luck, I hope they get the smack down that they deserve.

  9. Coca Cola, has a history of racial bias. It is an Old Southern Company founded, in Atlanta,Georgia. They resist change, and cling to their Old Southern Ways. They fail to realize, that yesterday is gone….We should boycott Coca Cola, and Sue Them Exactly Where it Hurts The Most in Their Pockets!!!!

  10. express yourself and tell the world that COKES-NOT-IT

  12. I want to thank everyone who has commented on this topic, as you might guess it hits close to home. Please stey tuned to the events that follows this lawsuit, what we are doing is not for money, but for real change, of course we will be compensated for all the things done to us, God willing, but at the end we want to see real change, and a compromise that this company will make a great effort, not as in the past, but a sincere effort to fix what is broken in their system, when it comes to minorities, not only here in America, but worldwide. The abuses of this company have gone unpunished for a long time. And to our future critics, those who questions are motives, and go as far as saying things such as, “If the job was so bad, why didn’t they just quit?”, all I have to say is what I have said in the past:
If taxation without representation was so bad, why didn’t the white founding fathers of this nation just pick up and set up another nation somewhere else?
But instead they stood their ground and fought for a better life, that’s all what we are doing, not just for us, but for the next genereation of minority workers who will be here well after we are all gone.
I ask the support of everyone reading this, you can make a difference, please like us on facebook.com/Thecoke16 and stay informed, blast everything from our page in your facebook accounts, and help us get the word out to the public.
As Dr King said when quoting another person:
“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere”
    God bless you all
