“Homophobic” Tweets Get Roland Martin Suspended From CNN

On Wednesday, CNN suspended political analyst Roland Martin for making “offensive” tweets on Super Bowl Sunday as he watched the game, according to the Washington Post.

During the Super Bowl show, Martin reportedly tweeted that “real bruhs” wouldn’t wear David Beckham underwear and that people should “smack the ish out” of any male that did. Watch the ad here:

Unfortunately, Martin’s controversial comments didn’t stop there. After receiving backlash for his statements, Martin tweeted:

@glaad @CNN

Well you’re clearly out of touch and clueless with what I tweeted. Way to assume, but you’re way off base.”

On Monday, Martin seemingly continued his controversial statements. Further commenting on the Super Bowl, Martin added:

Who the h**l was that New England Patriot they just showed in a head to toe pink suit? Oh, he needs a visit from #teamwhipdatass.

The gay rights group Gay Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) wasn’t pleased. To them, anti-gay sentiment in this country is too high and Martin’s comments just add fuel to the fire.

Aware that his comments had taken on a life of its own, Martin released this statement:

Fam, let me address the issue that some in the LGBT community have raised regarding some of my Super Bowl tweets yesterday.  I made several cracks about soccer as I do all the time. I was not referring to sexuality directly or indirectly regarding the David Beckham ad, and I’m sorry folks took it otherwise. It was meant to be a deliberately over the top and sarcastic crack about soccer; I do not advocate violence of any kind against anyone gay, or not. As anyone who follows me on Twitter knows, anytime soccer comes up during football season it’s another chance for me to take a playful shot at soccer, nothing more.

And even though 370 people or 81 percent of NewsOne voters felt that GLAAD was overreacting, CNN decided it was best to actually suspend the CNN personality:

Roland Martin’s tweets were regrettable and offensive. Language that demeans is inconsistent with the values and culture of our organization, and is not tolerated. We have been giving careful consideration to this matter, and Roland will not be appearing on our air for the time being.

Do you think CNN and GLAAD is out of line or do you think that Martin shouldn’t have made the statements in the first place?

    Yes, I do think the gay mafia known as GLAAD are truly hypocrites. Two-faced hypocrites who whine and wail about tolerance, and are not tolerant at all. I will not watch CNN, I will boycott CNN from here on out. Roland did not make anti-gay slurs, and the thought police known as the gay mafia are can no longer piggyback on the Civil Rights movement, and claim Blacks and gays are the same when both groups are completely different. Being Black is NOT immoral, yet according to the majority of the world, being gay is.

    I believe that they were pressured into doing this. I don’t believe that he should’ve been suspended. I think what he said was taking out of context. The pink suit that person was wearing was probably ugly! That had nothing to do with that person’s sexuality. David Beckham is married so how is the comment toward him have anything to do with his sexuality? I don’t know, I think this has gone way beyond what it was meant and I hope he stands his ground.

    It’s ok to demean and disrespect the Commander and Chief, but don’t make any statements that can be construed as “Homophobic!” This is such blatant hypocrisy and a prime example of caving to the wishes of the vocal minority. If you are engaging in an alternative life style that you find enjoyment in and which pleases you, that’s your personal business. I think the majority of Americans respect the rights of homosexuals as they respect the rights of any other “so-call” Minority Group. But that does not give homosexuals the right to impose their beliefs and their opinions on other people. Roland’s statements while for the most part were inappropriate; they did not rise to the level of being suspended from his job. While the homosexual community demands that society be more sensitive to their needs, it would seem to me only fair that they should practice what they preach!

    It was never intended for the same s*x to reproduce to
    Repopulate or to multiply the earth! That’s why a man and a woman was created! Gay people get so offensive why because
    It was never designed or set up to be that way! You don’t have to defend what’s right!!!!!!!!!!! It always works its way out if it’s right!
