Dr. Boyce: Black Teen Invents a New Surgical Procedure (Video)

Tony Hansberry appears to have a very bright future in front of him. Tony has been called “the next Charles Drew” for the amazing work he’s done at such an early age. He is a student at the Carnell Cookman School of Medical Arts in Jacksonville, Florida. The school is the first magnet school in the country with an integrated medical curriculum.
Tony developed a project that allowed him to reduce the time it takes to perform hysterectomies. This helped him to gain the attention of medical doctors at The University of Florida, who then invited him to present alongside them at a medical education event.
Now this is something to talk about. Lets see how much media coverage these students get.
Exactly! This is something about the Black community to talk about and highlight. All the coverage Black people get is “this Black dude got shot in a gang fight in front of the liquor store”,”two niggas fighting over one not knowing Beyonce’s husband is Jay-Z”,”Black girl advertises on Facebook that she’ll pay $1000 for someone to kill her baby daddy”,”5-10 year old Black girls gyrating and shaking their asses on tape like video hoes in training”,drama,drama,drama. This is actually something the Black community can be proud of without bowing our heads in shame.
WE have lots of kids that are smart…but when they get to school you have these prejudice teachers that want to dumb them down…and when they get to college you have prejudice professors who find all and any ways to give them lower grades….and you can not do anything about it…
Then you have Standard TESTS who first Ask you your race then your name…..what is race got to do with taking a test
I’ve seen it happened and I’ve been there…….
So that is why you do not see more kids like this…they don’t want MORE kids like this….
They want to pump negativity in our community and it is UP TO THE PARENTS TO GUILD THIOER CHILDREN or someone else will guild them
This young man is brilliant and following the footsteps of past Black scientists and inventors. He should be a household name. Black Media needs more stories like this & less buffonery. Thank you for posting.
did anyone watch the video? he didn’t invent anything, he just did his own experiment (he designed a study where he calculated his time etc)
I do applaud him for being smart and actually participating in these events, especially as a 9th grader. In 9th grade I was too busy learning Spanish and playing sports to care about my future like this kid.
We should see more stories like this on the cable news services. Balance that’s what’s needed to
dispel the myths about our youths.

I believe a person that have such great hatred in they heart is uneducated, devilish and lack common sense; President Obama is one of the greatest presidents America has ever had since George Washington. I never believe I would live to see an Africian American becoming president, but with God all things are possible, America has come a long way, and have yet many more miles to go by the grace of God. We now need to start practicing Love toward each other and not hate; no matter what color you are, we all have gifts and talents, and if you need education, you bigots, go back to school or seek God, He is the answer to every problem you have. Remember, education is power. This is a new year, lets move forward.

This is what our children, African American children, strive for each day. There is just not enough focus on these African American children who are focused on the gifts that Christ through the Holy Spirit have led them to develop since there creation. The young brother is one of the many that understands his Godly gift and purpose for his creation. In video snippet we needed to see more about the young brother and his invention, his truly blessed motivation and drive, and less about the doctors that assisted and the program that became a vehicle of his gift. There even needs to be a program that explores the young African American inventors that create everyday, their blessed gifts, motivation, and courageous drive.
He looks like just another kid playing a video game. Congrats to the doctors for inventing something useful that can also be used for entertainment of 9th graders. Maybe it will give them something to do while in the waiting room, as their parents are getting stitched up from being stabbed or shot or cracked out.
One thing to remember about this article, is that this child did not create the device being used here. What he created was the study to see if it worked. This is a lot like creating a study to see if the sun comes up tomorrow. All you have to do is live through the night.

This procedure was not the doctor’s but that of the young man. I surely hope that his idea has been patented. So many times people have ideas that are stolen from them. Good job young man.
Well, first of all, you are incorrect. I won’t say “lying” because I’m giving you the benefit of the doubt. But by this young man’s own words on the video, in addition to the grownup white guy who walked this child through the process, no, he did not invent the new surgical procedure as the title of this page claims. Your specific claim is less clear, since you say that the procedure “was… that of the young man” which really means nothing. By “was” do you mean he owns it, created it, improved it, stole it, learned it, simplified it, or what? Say, are you in 9th grade too? That’s a pretty big deal these days, especially for people who read this web page.

This is the 8th day of 2012 and we are still being controlled by our hurts, disappoints, short comings, bad relationships, lost, and most of all SELF failures. I believe it is just easier to rejoice with those who are rejoicing, cry with and comfort those who are hurting, and encourage those who are enduring overwhelming pain. This is a great accomplishment for this youngman and our future. If we would take out more time to invest in other childrens talents we would have 1. honest Politicans, 2. Just Law Enforcement ( Judges, Police Officers etc) 3. Committeed to the Lord Pastors, Preachers, Teaches, Evangelist, Christians 4. Men and Women of Integrity happy solid families and communities. Tony Hansberry, has a great future. Equal opportunities and the right upbringing of a child would rarely create chaos of any kind in the society. I want to advise that people that engage in love should love in totality and make it an agape love…knowing that true love story has no ending… and then that your blackman has been a victim of world wars of different kinds.
In Nigeria, where i’m resident, today, is a strike day, where the masses are fighting for petroleum products prices to be reversed to its original pump price of =N=65 per liter, which government had deregulated earlier.
The blacman is born into all sorts of wars and our women should be taught to identify with the struggles of the blackman, because equality is a mere fantasy and a mirage as long as we are a minority in the comity of nations, but innovative minds like that of Tony Hanberry would liberate us and make us walk tall in pride.
It is a blessing to hear ANY good news regarding African American youth. It is definately a blessing when it regards African American males. Every young black man does not aspire to take the road to destruction.
I am so proud of him. There are more young black children like him. It is not covered. The media whether is liberal or conservative seems to like to protray our brilliant black young men as ignorant, nasty, disrespectful and arrogant. You can see this in how they treat this president.

Well, he didn’t invent the procedure but, he does have an indept understanding of the procedure and could probably improve on the procedure once he learns a little more. I applaud his hard work. I love the story, but we need to keep things real. There are more Tony’s out there. But, they will always be the exception, just as “exceptional performance” is the exception across all communities. We need to make sure that we nurture all the young men and women out there, even if they are not exceptional. The value in becoming productive contributors to society has to be re-enforced with all our young folks. And, we shouldn’t be so quick to applaud the superstars without paying tribute to those who stay the course slow and steady and make their way to important, successful outcomes. Shellfish 789, there are plenty of things that can be done about the people who work to “Dumb Down” our young Black Brothers and Sisters, We as their parents need to be active at all levels of their lives while they are being educated in the various institutions. When these so called instructors see we take no part in being active during the learning process then they sit back and do very little to assist our children from grade school to graduation from college. It is up to you and all other parents to make sure our children are doing their best, which is all anyone can ask for. Love and praise. It works, Its like a bank account, you get back what you put into it! (in this case our children lives count on it and so do we.) We are the very first “teachers” our children see and learn from, so you see it is’nt only on the teachers in the schools but each parent who is truly concerned about that child.
