Dr. Boyce: Should Black America Expect More from Obama Than Any Other President?

by Dr. Boyce Watkins

I’ve heard people say that the expectations on Barack Obama are greater from our community than they have been for any other president.  When someone highlights the fact that black unemployment has actually worsened under the Obama Administration while improving within the white community, the quickest reaction I typically hear is “He’s president of all of America, not just black America,” which appears to be an excuse for him not to do anything.  There is no question that President Obama has bigger issues to worry about than us ‘lil old black folks,’ but we seem to become pretty important to the White House around election time.

  1. No!
We should expect a President who has ALL the people of the United States welfare, and the safty of our country, not just whites, blacks or whom-ever.
There is no other candidate that will be running against President Obama that is worth too much, and especially for poor, black Americans, or poor other races of people!
Take a good, hard look at what this President has accomplished, given what he has had to deal with (including blatent racism) since being elected.

    Re-elect OBAMA/BIDEN in 2012~

Please stop these types of foolish commentaries. I know you are expecting to be asked to comment on various news shows, but stop the crap!

  2. Dr. Watkins, this logic comes straight from Tavis Smiley and Cornel West, which if I am right are a couple of good friends of yours. He is the President of the United States it is not a convenient excuse, he does have a responsibllity to blacks but definitely not because he is black as well. That’s like saying it’s okay for a white president to cater to whites because they are all of the same race. Why didn’t you and Cornel West demand anything from George W. Bush during his eight years? It’s not about color!

  3. No. It is up to each of us to create our own destiny. What you are suggesting is no different than the politicians in the GOP who say they will create jobs. If the need isn’t there, it does not matter what tax cuts are made, what laws are put in place, there will still be no jobs. Only we can create the jobs. I refuse to depend on some distant someone to feed and clothe me and my family.
@ Spencer- White presidents HAVE catered to the white constituents. The ones who have made changes for all Americans have been vilified or at least marginalized.

    • @Herb, you’re correct I was not specific enough what I meant was by example if GWB openly and blatantly served his white constituents there would have been hell to pay, and this not to say that he didn’t cater to them in subtle manner. It was a poor illustration I’ll concede but we shouldn’t expect President Obama to cater to blacks over other Americans simply because he is black. I agree with you 100% that it is up to us to create our own destiny.

  4. Ah yes, ill informed, misinformed, uninformed, misguided, mentally challenged, retro-regressive Negroes. GOD just ain’t making Black Folks like he use to. Do you understand that during this “President for All The People” term in office, White Unemployment went down while Black unemployment went up significantly, including highly educated, highly skilled Black folks. Do you understand that more Black Middle Class folks have either dropped down near the poverty line or just below the poverty, the greatest lost of Black wealth in 51 years! Do you understand that the White Corporate Oligarchy were given billions of your tax dollars in zero interest free loans, while credit worthy, struggling Black businesses could not get the time of day. Guess President Obama is just more of the President for White folks than Black folks, but given Black folks history of never ending suffering we should be use to it by now.

    • The reasons for persistent unemployment among blacks are not hard to find. First were the massive state and federal cutbacks in job training and skills programs under GWB, which have only been made worse by the slash and burn budget and deficit-reduction proposals of the GOP free marketers—people. Second has been the brutal competition with immigrants for low and partly skilled service and retail jobs. Add to that the refusal of many employers to hire those with criminal records, which sledge-hammered Black communities. There was a recent survey on employers’ hiring practices in some of the major cities show that many top corporate officials said in interviews they would not hire Blacks. When asked to assess the work ethic of White, Black and Latino employees by race, a high percentage of employer’s ranked Blacks dead last. It has nothing to do with anyone being i”…ll informed, misinformed, uninformed, misguided, mentally challenged, etc.” and the onus is not on President Obama as you seem to suggest. You are correct that blacks seem to endure a “never ending suffering” but there are few blacks that know the Answer to their trials and their faith it is not in the president or the federal government their faith is in the Lord.

      • @Spencer,
I agree with everything you wrote with one exception.
Along with their “faith” (which have been there since we got off the ship), you need to take action!
        You need education!
        You need to prepare yourself!
You need to stop doing the illegal crap which you know is a crime and will put you behind bars!
You need to stop slaughtering your own people, and respect them as well as your ancestors who greatly suffered so you could do better!
You need to stop placing blame on all of your negative issues on others!
You need to stop bringing unsuspecting/innocent babies into this world that you can’t take care of!
You need to be a parent to the children you have, and take responsibility for them!
Faith is great, however I think GOD wants you to take action along with having faith!
        Great post!

        • BlackBeauty, what you say is extremely true. My post was to inform the good doctor that the black unemployment rate in America today doesn’t rest solely on the shoulders of one man. As you indicate, it involves much much more. However, faith in God is what we really need and yes we can’t expect God to intervene while we stand idly by and do nothing to help ourselves your point is well taken.

  5. Salutations Dr. Boyce !!! I heard you on NPR (Affirmative action) You were right on. I am where I am as a free lance writer today because of an affirmative action program here in Columbia SC. We still need Affirmative action. The playing field still is not level enough. To papraphrase the late great Andy Rooney who said one he wished that black people could vote for a white candidate and white people could vote for a black candidate with suffering any reprisals or repercussions. He made those comments back in the late eighties. He lived to see all Americans put a Black President in office. If he were still living I think he would side with you Dr. Boyce that we still need AFFIRMATIVE ACTION. PEACE DR Boyce

  6. I criticize the President too for things he won’t do but I am a realist. We have a black President that is taunted, harrassed and totally disrespected not just by ordinary white folk but by those in positions of power and influence. The President equals MLK in the racist hatred against this first black President. If anybody is stupid enough to believe that only his policies is the justification for this vile disrespect then why the birth certificate fiasco. Black people learn about this white country. A house divided cannot stand and we as a people never could lay a foundation even though King help to establish some mortar and when the Jews threw more money at us than could be imagined and covinced us that we are all the same that did it for the majority.

  7. Yes. WE voted for him at a greater rate than any other ethnic group, yet we haven’t benefited from his being President as we should have. Unemployment numbers are still very high, while white unemployment numbers have fallen during the same time span! Time to create jobs-re-invest our $800 billion yearly income back into ourselves and our own communities!

    • I disagree, President Obama is the President of the United States. He is not a civil rights actiivist or the president of the NAACP. His duty is for all the people, not just for black people. Should he be concerned about the issues that perplex the black community? Of course, but as the president and not because he is black. I am cognizant of the fact that there were many presidents who catered to white America over other Americans because they too were white, in fact you can easily say that most of them have done so. But does this mean that President Obama should do likewise? No! After he is re-elected, I believe that he will do much more for the black community than he has done during his first term. Why? He will no longer have to deal with the pressures a political campaign. This may not sound right to you, but politics is politics there’s some things you can’t do at certain times that you can do later on.

……..you bet. Although Hispanics, Caucasians, Koreans, can serve blacks too, it is not in the best interest of any other ethnic group to be the first to step up to the plate to serve any U.S. born descendant of slavery…..especially in instances where Caucasians, Hispanics, Koreans, etc., are proven to be in violation of the law, and must pay a debt via redress to any U.S. born descendant of slavery victimized by the criminal or civil wrongs of any Caucasian, Hispanic, Korean, etc…..i.e.

Black America should hold President Obama, the Congressional Black Caucus, etc., to the fire and make them accountable to his or her sworn oath of office to uphold the U.S. Constitution, the rule of law in behalf of U.S. born black men and women violated by government or anyone else.

Tax dollars pay them, including tax dollars that blacks are forced to pay, so as a taxpayer you should expect and receive competent representation…..which is especially the case for black elected officials who hold office, whose first duty, and responsibility is to serve U.S. born blacks.

Many U.S. citizens, including yours truly, and other U.S. born Black people don’t respect Obama because he has contempt for the U.S. Constitution, contempt for the rule of law, and he like other misfits will step up to the plate to serve illegal immigrants from around the world before competently serving U.S. citizens and legal immigrants.
