Your Black Politics: In November, White Unemployment Drops, While Black Unemployment Rises in Every Category

by Dr. Boyce Watkins – Your Black World

When it comes to the November unemployment numbers issued by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there was a tale of two ethnicities.  White Americans saw their unemployment rate decline in every demographic (women, men and teens), while African Americans saw their rate rise in every single category.

The overall national unemployment rate dropped from 9% to 8.6%, which has been hailed as a victory for the Obama Administration.  But the differentials conceal a sharp and problematic racial undertone as it pertains to black unemployment.  White men saw their unemployment rate decline the most, dropping from 7.9% to 7.3%, while black men endured a spike from 16.2% to an especially disturbing 16.5%.

  1. I wonder why???

  2. Discrimination in the hiring process in the root .

  3. who is this shocking to?

    • @rudeboi–You said a mouthful! Can we blame this on The First ‘black’ President’s Administration?
I wonder which Americans will Obams’s JOBS BILL ffavor.

  4. Being “twice as good to go half as far” will never work in a countrywide work environment that has “dumbed down” on purpose! Anybody read Charlotte Thomson Iserbyte’s book: “The Deliberate Dumbing Down of America?” The last interview I went to, one where I matched each described qualification to each area of my expertise, and explained where I got it from, resulted in one of the human resource interviewers standing up, after my interview, saying: “I JUST DON’T KNOW HOW YOU KNOW WHAT YOU KNOW!” I was shocked, shocked that after one hour of being interviewed, and explaining how I knew what I knew, that someone would say that to me! It was “scary!” Dumb it down, Y’All…on purpose, if you want a job!

    • Are you serious? What type of position was it? I hope you needed reasonable analogical skills to do the job. Do these folks think we are all living under a rock? This society has got to do better about fairness to all people.
I wish that blacks could established more banks and credit unions that would strickly help our race.
I do think that would make a big different in our controlling wealth in this country. We could established more job opportunities and training facilities for blacks. It is starting with some of the churches, but more need to be done.

    • Joyce,

I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment. That also holds true when you are hired and assume the position. In my experience, I was ridiculed and bullied because I upheld the standards of my organizations and was repeatedly called out as a “Pollyanna” for treating clients fairly and maintaining a positive attitude.

Although I received praise from management for making the organization look good, they still viewed me with a “curious eye” and even stated that I was “too good to be true” and seemed to be waiting for the other shoe to drop!! I could not believe that an organization advertised for employees with certain skills set and personality traits and then turned around and “mocked” them for having said attributes!!

Needless to say, management’s ambivalent attitude on this matter created an acrimonious work environment for those of us who tried to be the best at our jobs. Back in the day, I was even told to not be so enthusiastic when I completed an assigment earlier than my colleagues; even though I did not volunteer the information but answered that I had finished the assignment when my supervisor asked the question of ALL STAFF in an impromptu staff meeting. I was later called a brown-noser and accused of trying to win brownie points with management.

Please hang in there and never compromise your intelligence and integrity for ANYONE!! You have to look in the mirror everyday and feel authentic and assured that you are the absolute best that you can be!!!

GOOD LUCK AND BEST WISHES WITH YOUR JOB SEARCH!!!!

  6. The jobs that were dominated by black Americans have been shipped overseas or gobbled up by illegal aliens sneaking across our Southern border and willing to work for chump change. Every time we buy some cheap Chinese junk we are skinking jobs for black Americans. Who do we look to to solve this? It’s easy to “blame” white Americans but most of them didn’t do this. Black Americans can only pick themselves up by exclusively picking themselves up. Time for an exclusive black American economy that isn’t based on entertainment and poverty pimpin.

    • Great comment. I think many black people are finnally seeing that this president has nothing to do with us, until he needs our votes.

      • id rather it be done by him than a white republican. would u rather the white man mess over us because its going to happen anyway. ill take obama! who else would u want newt gringrich? think about it! want a man thats trying to give you healhcare or one that would rather see u back on the plantation? choose your poison.

  7. I’ve heard over and over again that when the economy does turn around that Caucasians will be the first hired thus the latest unemployment stats are no surprise.

    • I’ve heard, over and over again, throughout my rather long life that: “blacks were the last hired and the first fired…” Hence, none of us should be surprised by what is happening now…

  8. The minority unemployment rate will not raise until we have unemployment for the general population down to about 5%. People hire who they know, like and seem to be more like them. Since, America is more than 60% white, and a higher percentage are rich, upper class or middle class, then it stands to reason, why minorities are hired less. Therefore, it is not racism, but favortism. Thus, minorities must seek solutions that help all Americans so that they can help themsleves.

The number one issue we have is jobs. I believe that we should hire 15 million people at 36k a year for one year and place them in different federal agencies. This would cost 540 Billion dollars. This can be paid by the Federal Reserve. Returning veterans would be great candidates for employees. The are already in the federal system.

The people who would be hired for a year will get good job experience, the agencies that have been decimated for the last 30 years would get the needed manpower they need to do their job competently. The tax base will increase to the city, county, states and federal government when they pay taxes. Small businesses and corporations will benefit when they via for the new money going into the economy.

The problem in our economy is not regulations, but lack of demand, lack of disposable money in the hand of people that will spend the money. So money going to the rich will not work. Money does not trickle down from the rich to the poor and then evaporate. Money drains from the poor, to the middle class, to the upper class to the super rich, and then settles, and collects there. The only way to stimulate the economy is by investment or taxation.

If the rich will not invest, the government must tax, and create jobs to get the unemployment rate at 5% or below. Look at the history of what has been tried by the republican idea of giving money to the rich: They told us that we needed to pass TARP to save the nation. But the money was just given to the rich, walls street, and big corporations. Additionally the FED loaned out 7.7 Trillion dollars. They did not tell us, because the congress did not know that the FED loaned out 7.7 Trillion dollars to these same people. Then the nation bought their loans back at 3%. A money making machine. Still the rich did not hire.

When the rich got all of this money, why didn’t they help us? Why didn’t they invest in America? Why didn’t they help the nation refinance homes, and give loans to the American People? Because of capitalist greed, a sense of superioty, and the fact that trickle down economics from the rich to the poor does not work.

What will work? Direct hire. The federal government needs to hire people into the federal government, as temp hires for one year. 15 million at 36k a year. This will stimulate the economy, help out the agencies that have been desimated by budget cuts, and give the new hires a skill they can parlay into a private sector job. Remember money does not trickle down from the rich to the poor, then disappear. Money drains from the poor to the working class at the top, then to the middle class in the middle, then to the upper and the rich class at the bottom. Money does not disappear, it either churns, in the economy or settles and collects with the rich. If the Federal Reserve can loan 7.7 Trillion dollars to the rich, then htey can sell bonds to raise 540 billion to get the nation’s unemployment down to 5%. 9. I’d like to thank Attorney Mike for such a well written and common sense appro ached to this issue. This makes more sense than anything our wealthy millionaire politicians have come up with.

  10. As for black unemployment I take a quote from the movie Social Network Where the Harvard Chancellor says: Harvard students believe that there are no jobs so the best job you can have is the job your create! I understand us blacks will be the last hired so use your experience to create your own job! Money is out here, you just have to find it.

  11. Black people do for self at: http://www.undercoversmart.com

  12. Nothing but Massive Racial Discrimination against Black people in this country. Everyone/company/government agency/private company / who is doing this should be sued, boycotted and put on public notice, period.

  13. well what’s new, this will continue to happen ,until Black people create businesses and employ their own just like white jews and white people do. Asians do this also.

  14. In my opinion, the reason why has never changed and it is this essentially: Black people, are still playing the blame game, as opposed to getting involved in their own recovery. Ten thousand black people stand in a Career Fair line, as noted by Representative Maxine Watters. How many of our networked or took the initiative to organize, and create income-producing opportunities for and among themselves. It is time for my people, “who are called by my name”, to stop the blame game, and to get up and do what they should have done 400 years ago. The system is what it is, therefore, you have to overcome the system whether they waiting on it to solve the problem of black employment. As a matter of fact, not many black employers, will hire black employees any more. Think about it. Author Derrick Bell in ‘Faces at the Bottom of the Well Wrote’, “if you keep on doing what you’ve been doing, you will keep on getting what you’ve been getting”. Never outsource your responsibility for yourselves to a 3rd Party, even a black President. Always, last hired and first fired, but still will not get up and create opportunities for yourselves, most black Americans!
