The life of former Washington DC mayor Marion Barry is one of the most unbelievable adventures in all of politics. He has seen the top of the mountain and the bottom of the valley, as the controversial politician who watched his power disappear over the temptation of a crack pipe. But what made Barry’s story most interesting was that his perseverance led him back to the top and bottoms of American politics on quite a few occasions.
Barry’s story has gained the interest of Hollywood, and there are now plans for a film about Barry’s life starring Eddie Murphy. The biopic is being developed by HBO Films, with Spike Lee and John Ridley on board for the project. Two DC journalists, Harry Jaffe and Tom Sherwood, have been approached as consultants on the life of Barry. Their book, “Dream City,” about DC politics is one of the most oft-consulted documents being used by the filmmakers.
Barry was a clearly flawed character in DC politics, but also one of the most charismatic. The film is expected to give interesting insights into Barry’s rise to the top and help the world understand why the city has been so loyal to him. The ride should be exciting.
