After Jay-Z‘s controversial “Occupy All Streets” t-shirts were yanked from the Rocawear website yesterday, many people speculated that he had caved to pressure from the #OccupyWallStreet movement to stop capitalizing on the backs of people who are fighting corporate greed.
Not the case.
A post on Rocawear’s website, Roc4Life stated that shirts were sold out due to high demand and they are back on sale today.
One of the protestors, Grim, voiced his opinion about the shirts, stating that: “Jay-Z, as talented as he is, has the political sensibility of a hood rat and is a scrotum. to attempt to profit off the first important social movement of 50 years with an overpriced piece of cotton is an insult to the fight for economic civil rights known as #occupywallstreet.”
Hip-Hop mogul and political activist, Russell Simmons is clearly supportive of the “Otis” rapper, taking to Twitter to say that all the speculation that Jigga-man isn’t going to donate proceeds to the Occupy movement is clearly “media spin.”
Jay-Z and Hip-Hop comrade, Kanye West, have come under fire because their “Republican” rap has taken a hard capitalist line, extolling the virtues of being young, black and rich during a time where unemployment in the Black community continues to remain double the rest of the country.
