On the heels of another African American Hollywood powerhouse Shonda Rhimes has repotedly sold another drama to ABC!

This one titled The Circle, will be an hour-long, is said to be “part soap, part conspiracy thriller,” according to THR.

The drama follows ten friends, adopted as children by a billionaire philanthropist, who begin to question their past when one of their own is murdered

It was just a week ago that Monique posted a fiery entry on Rhimes, which inspired lots of debate, as expected. In that post, it was announced that Rhimes had sold a dramedy series toFox titled Wildwood. You can read that post HERE if you missed it, along with the 65 or so comments that followed.

  1. Ok, I had to read the article about Shonda Rhimes before commenting. I think she’s doing a GREAT job! I also think that if you want to be a successful BLACK person in Hollywood, you have to play the game. She KNOWS what works, obviously. If it means that she has to cast White people in lead roles while allowing the Black people and other minorities in supporting roles to get a show accepted, so be it. She is still opening doors. We’ve seen how many shows get rejected by coming through the “front door” of these networks with an all-Black cast. Therefore, I believe that Shonda is coming in through the “back door” so to speak. By her giving these networks these award-winning shows that the “masses” want to see, she’s opening up the opportunity for other Black creators/writers. It takes time to make a difference in Hollywood. Tyler Perry was the one that got away. He was able to bypass Hollywood to create his own studio, but if you notice he had to already amass some money and following ahead of time. He had to show that his entertainment would bring the crowd, THEN Hollywood allowed him to enter. It’s really the same thing, just different routes. I’m just proud that a BW is representing in Hollywood. It’s difficult to do and once she gets to a point where she can be “trusted” to make hit shows, then hopefully she’ll be in a position to create an all-black cast OR a leading black male/female in a hit show. I think we as Black people are too hard on other Black people sometimes. One Black person can’t be the savior for everyone and you have to work within the confines of what White America allows you, if that’s the route you choose. Once you’ve gotten to a certain point, THEN you can do what you want and help other Black people rise.
