There was no evidence of foul play in the mysterious death of a Vidor football player, according to autopsy results released Tuesday.

The autopsy confirmed that Matt Thomas, 18, died eary Saturday from massive injuries caused by the train.

Orange County Justice of the Peace Derry Dunn said Thomas was lying face down on the tracks when he was struck by the train. He said the engineer saw Thomas and tried to stop, but it was too late.

Dunn said it’s possible Thomas fell asleep or passed out on the tracks. Routine toxicology tests will determine if alcohol or drugs were involved, but those results won’t be available for several weeks.

Dunn told KFDM that Thomas had left a party early Saturday morning and was heading home. He was about a mile from his house when the train struck him.
